ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

Here are a few things to know before taking the next steps in your journey:

• Donkeys are herd animals and they require companions, preferably one or more donkeys. Some of our donkeys at the Haven are deeply bonded with a companion and cannot be adopted without her/him/them.

• Adopters must own the property where the donkey will live.

• Donkeys need a minimum of one acre, safely fenced. Multiple donkeys may require more space depending on certain other factors.

• Donkeys are desert animals, used to dry, arid climates, and their coats are not waterproof. They must have continuous access to a permanent shelter with a roof and at least three sides to protect them from wind, rain, and winter weather.

• Adopters are required to live on the property where the donkeys will be homed.

• Donkeys need a constant source of clean, fresh water other than tanks/ponds, streams, or naturally occurring bodies of water, which can be a source of parasites, and freeze or evaporate.

• Donkeys require regular vet checkups, farrier care, dental exams, and parasite control/deworming to live their healthiest, happiest lives.

• Our adoption agreement requires adopters to return donkeys to the Haven if they are no longer able or willing to care for them.

• The donation per animal is $500, non-refundable, and is tax deductible.

If you meet these requirements, please take a couple of minutes to complete this

questionnaire [I will send you the link], and we will reach out to schedule your visit to

meet our wonderful residents.

Thank you for your interest in adopting. Donkeys are loving, intelligent creatures that will enrich your life in many ways. We are very thorough when placing a donkey into a new home in order to ensure the best match for their forever home.  The first step in the adoption process is filling out an adoption inquiry form, which you can find here.
